The Four C’s of Diamonds: Part 4 – Carat Weight
A carat is the unit of measurement that is used when determining the weight of a diamond. One carat is equal to 0.2 grams or 200 milligrams. There is a difference between “carat” which is used for diamonds and “karat” which is used to measure the purity of gold. A carat is divisible into one hundred “points”, with each one of these points being 2 milligrams each. The weight of smaller diamonds is usually denoted in “points”, or one-hundredth, or a carat.  Regardless of carat size, Biltmore Loan and Jewelry are diamond buyers in Scottsdale, Phoenix Arizona who will pay the most for your diamond jewelry. There are different ways for measuring the weight of a diamond. One method is to weight out a loose stone on a special diamond scale that is calibrated for small weights. Another method is to use an electronic measurer or to use a diamond weight estimator sheet which has cutouts for different diamond shapes and sizes giving a rough estimate of diamond weight. The word carat is derived from an Arabic word that was a term for a carob seeds that people used in ancient times to balance scales.

A diamond’s carat weight is a huge factor in determining the price of a diamond. Cut, color, and clarity generally have more significance in the price of a diamond. For example, a .75 ct diamond with a high color and high clarity grade will usually cost more than a 1.00 carat diamond that has a medium color and medium clarity grade.

The abbreviation “ct” is a shortened way to write carat, which refers to the weight of a single diamond. There is the also the abbreviation “ct TW” or “tcw” meaning total carat weight which is used to describe the total weight of multiple diamonds in a piece of jewelry.

Larger diamonds are a lot rarer in nature than smaller diamonds. Biltmore Loan and Jewelry specializes in have large stones and want to sell diamond jewelry in Scottsdale, Phoenix Arizona. Because of their rarity, the value of diamonds increases exponentially rather than on a straight line. For example a 4.00 carat diamond will cost more than twice as much as a 2.00 carat diamond of the same quality in terms of color and clarity.
